Op. Dr. Şükrü İşler
The excess caused by weight gain in the abdominal region is an issue that everyone complains about. Abdominoplasty is the operation in which the excess fat and skin tissue in the lower abdomen is removed and the muscles that are relaxed in this region are strengthened; It’s called a tummy tuck.
After birth, weight gain or gastric sleeve surgery, the abdominal skin sags and cracks occur.
With rapid weight gain, the dermis in the lower layer of the skin is stretched, the skin becomes thinner in these stretched areas and abdominal cracks occur.
With weight gain, the muscle layer that keeps the abdominal organs tense relaxes and separates; Although weight is lost, these muscles do not return to their former places and sagging occurs because the looseness continues.
An incision is made so that the scars in the lower abdomen are hidden in the bikini. This scar of patients who have had cesarean section surgery is made through the cesarean section.
In mini abdominoplasty, the scar is as long as the cesarean section or 1-2 cm longer, while in full abdominoplasty, the scar is made by lengthening the cesarean section scar. Sagging and cracked skin and excess fat are removed, and liposuction is performed in the same session to thin the waist area.
Then, the patient’s skin tissue is removed and the weaknesses in the muscle tissue are repaired. The next step consists of stretching the skin tissue and suturing it and removing the excess skin.
In full tummy tuck, the enlarged and enlarged belly button is shaped by making it smaller. In mini tummy tuck, the belly button is not operated.
Then, the loosened and slipped muscle tissue is tightened and the abdominal skin is closed with aesthetic sutures.
The procedure is completed by wearing a corset to support the stitches and support the newly formed abdominal shape.
After the operation, many patients are worried that pregnancy-related problems may occur. You can get pregnant at least 1 year after this operation.
It should not be forgotten that loosening will occur in the abdominal region, although not as much as before after pregnancy.
After pregnancy, stretch marks occur in your abdomen and the abdominal wall becomes loose. It would be appropriate to perform the surgery at least 12 months after pregnancy in order to lose the weight gained and to fit your abdominal region.
When you complete the breastfeeding period, you can have this operation with peace of mind. If you are planning a pregnancy after a short time again, it is recommended to have it done after the second pregnancy in order to achieve a more productive result.
During the interview, your current complaints and post-operative expectations are evaluated first.
With the pre-operative examination, the excess skin-adipose tissue in your abdomen is evaluated and your belly button and waist area are examined in detail.
If you have diabetes or thyroid disease and you are considering this surgery, your blood sugar and triode hormone value must be regulated.
If you smoke, it should be stopped before surgery.
After the operation, you need to stay in the hospital for 1-2 days. During this period, you have drains to prevent seroma (intra-abdominal fluid accumulation). These drains will be removed when you are discharged and you will be sent home.
It is possible that there will be edema and swelling in your abdomen in the first few days, it is important to use the corset regularly to reduce them.
It is difficult to stand upright after the tummy tuck operation, and it is important to walk without an upright position for the first 1 week. Walking prevents the formation of problems such as clotting.
You can take a shower 5 days after the operation. Movements such as coughing and sneezing increase your intra-abdominal pressure and cause increased pain, it is recommended to avoid these actions in the first week.
Walking will help you recover in the first 3-4 weeks. This will increase the existing blood circulation, accelerate the healing and quickly reduce your edema.
It takes a few weeks for you to return to physical activities as before after tummy tuck surgery. That's why if you have a desk job, after 10 days, you need to take a few weeks off for jobs that require heavy activity.
You should use a regular corset for the first month. You can start light sports from the 6th week and heavy sports from the 3rd month.
The scars that develop after the operation have a reddened appearance at first. These scars will fade over time and become less obvious.
After the operation, the scars will remain under the underwear and bikini and will not disturb you.
Wound healing is a personal matter; Depending on this, your wound healing may vary. While the wounds are pink-red in the first months, they gradually begin to fade after the 6th month.
In the first year, the scars will become a thin, indistinct scar on your skin color. These scars are in the region of the cesarean section and extend towards the waist on both sides. It should not be forgotten that your scars will remain inside your bikini area.
